Day-to-day tips for net controllers, backups, and the Net Manager. See also the full Features list.
- Hover most buttons in the app to see a short tooltip describing what they do.
- Press ⌘K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) — or click the Search… button in the top bar — to open the command palette and jump to any page, trigger quick actions, or look up an operator by call sign or name. Faster than menu hunting once you know the page name.
- Keyboard power users: the Net Runner has shortcuts for the most-used actions — Alt+A jumps to the Call Sign field, Enter logs the check-in, Alt+K acknowledges everyone in the current group, and Alt+N / Alt+B move between steps. Press ? in the runner for the on-screen cheat sheet, or see the full Keyboard Shortcuts guide.
- In any check-in table, when a group has unacknowledged stations an Ack all (N) button appears above the table — useful for small groups where you want to mark everyone at once.
- Want more screen real estate? Toggle the left sidebar between full and icon-only with the panel button in the top bar, or press ⌘B / Ctrl+B. The sidebar also auto-collapses once per session when you open the Active Net runner during a live net — pin it back open any time.
- Glance at the Tonight strip just under the header to see whether a net is on the air (with elapsed time and Primary/Backup) or, when idle, the next scheduled date with its assigned operators.
- In the sidebar, the Active Net entry shows a green pulsing LIVE pill while a net is open — visible from any screen, including the N/C Chat unread badge if you're missing messages.
- Signing in from a new computer or browser? Visit Profile first — your call sign, name, and location live on each device and are what fill in {CALL}, {NAME}, and {LOCATION} in the preamble. Required fields are validated inline.
- The N/C Profile Quick Link on the home screen turns green when your local profile is complete and red when something is missing — a quick visual cue when switching devices.
- Hold the club passphrase in Settings so writes are accepted by the server.
- In the check-in panel, start typing a call sign and use ↑/↓ then Enter to pick a known operator — name and location are filled in for you. The Location field has its own autocomplete from previously seen locations, so a guest who hasn't checked in before still gets consistent location strings.
- Made a typo? Click the pencil icon next to a logged check-in to fix the call sign, name, location, station type, time type, or notes without deleting the entry. Works in both the Guided Runner and the freeform tabbed view; edits save immediately and are recorded in the audit log.
- Running the net in the Guided Runner? The Right Rail on the right side gives at-a-glance situational awareness — Glance (counts, elapsed time, station mix), Preamble (compact stepper with click-to-jump), and Chat. On screens narrower than 1280px, open it via the Rail button.
- Watch the small 📡 N relay requests waiting pill while running the net — it surfaces App Relay check-ins from the public Listener View. Review them from the full tray during Group 6 (Late) and Close, then Acknowledge / Approve & Log / Reject. Approved relays write to the new App Relay group with station type App.
- On the Preamble announcements step, tick each numbered announcement off as you read it on-air. A live x/y counter and a green ✓ All announcements read badge make it easy to keep your place. Checks reset automatically the next net night.
- Need to coordinate quietly during a net? Open N/C Chat — or, on the Active Net runner, use the docked Chat tab in the Net Rail (desktop) or the floating panel in the top-right (tablet / mobile). Type @CALL to ping another controller, or hit RELAY to send a structured fill (call, name, location) straight to the running Primary. While they're calling the net, the Primary's chat stays quiet — only pinned notices, @mentions to their call, and relays for them come through. New inbound messages auto-switch the rail to Chat and pulse the tab so they aren't missed.
- Running long? On an open net with a backup assigned, use Hand Off to Backup to swap operators mid-net. Any registered net controller can initiate the handoff, so if the primary loses power or internet the backup (or another controller) can take over and the swap is logged automatically.
- Backup N/C? When a net is open, the home screen shows a live check-in stream and a Follow Live link that opens a realtime read-only mirror of the running net. If the primary drops off, click Take Over as N/C to switch into the editable console — no refresh needed.
- Clicked Start a New Live Net by mistake? You have four safety nets: the start buttons are disabled whenever any net (live or test) is already open; the confirmation dialog won't enable the action button until you type START; if a live net already exists for today the dialog points you at Resume Tonight's Net instead of creating a duplicate; and right after a live net is created a 10-second toast offers an Undo button that fully deletes it.
- Working a late shift? Click the theme icon in the header to cycle to Night mode — red on black to preserve dark-adapted vision.
- Need to move the net to the secondary repeater (or simplex) mid-stream? Hit Switch Repeater in the Net Actions cluster — it defaults to 145.190 (secondary), writes a timestamped REPEATER SWITCH line into the net notes, updates the live frequency for the public Listener page, and pings every registered N/C's inbox so backups know where the net went.
- Starting a new net? The pre-flight dialog runs four readiness checks (app version, auth session, database reachability, realtime channel) before the Start button enables. Heed warnings — a stale bundle or a dead realtime channel is much easier to fix at 19:28 than at 19:34. Watch for the sticky A new version is available toast between nets and click Reload before your next shift.
- Check the My Inbox panel on the home page (or full-page at /inbox) every time you sign in. It's the single place that gathers schedule-confirmation requests for your slot, incoming swap requests, @mentions and replies in N/C Chat, application status while pending approval, and direct or broadcast notes from managers. Hover to mark read, act inline, or hit Mark all read to clear the badge in one tap.
- Manager / Co-Manager / Editor: use Send N/C note on the My Inbox header for things like "can you cover Tuesday?" or drill reminders. Pick a single recipient or broadcast to all N/Cs — recipients see it as a persistent inbox item that won't scroll away like a chat message.
- Scheduled to call a net soon? The home screen now shows your next 3 N/C shifts right under the Welcome line — a quick reminder of upcoming Primary and Backup assignments with a link to the full schedule.
- Scheduled to call the net? Make sure your call sign in Profile matches the schedule — the app uses it to fire reminder popups (and chime / title flash / OS notification) at 19:15, 19:20, 19:23, and 19:25 on Mondays. Adjust which effects fire from Settings → Reminder Notifications and use the test buttons there to confirm sound and notifications work in your browser.
- Use a Test Net when training new operators — its data stays out of real statistics.
- Only one net at a time — the Start a New Live Net and Start Test Net buttons are disabled (with an explanatory tooltip) whenever any net is already open. Close the in-progress net from Net History or Test History before starting another. Every net — live or test — is automatically followable in the home Live Net panel and on the Follow page.
- New here, or onboarding another N/C? Open the printable N/C Quick Checklist for a one-page summary of the workflow with links to every guide.
- New here, or onboarding another N/C? Click the help (?) icon in the header to open the latest onboarding, scheduler, chat, and primary ↔ backup handoff PDF guides — always the most recent versions. Managers, Co-Managers, and Editors also see a Manager / Co-Manager / Editor Guide in the same menu.
- The header also has a Sparkles icon (Features) and a Lightbulb icon (Tips) for one-click access to this catalog and tip list from any screen.
- Need a printable copy of the script, the announcements, or the N/C schedule? Use the Export PDF button on the Preamble, Announcements, or Schedule page.
- Need to reach the Net Manager? Use the Contact Net Manager Quick Link on the home screen — it opens a pre-filled email with your call sign and name. The address is shared across all devices and only the Net Manager can change it from Settings.
- Want to share the live net with non-operators? Send them the Listener View link — no login required. They'll see the On Air status, preamble progress, check-ins, and announcements update in real time. They can even pause realtime updates from the header if they're on a metered connection.
- Found a bug or have an idea? Open Bugs & Requests from the home Quick Links to file or read reports. Editors can respond and mark items resolved directly on the board.
- Lost connectivity during a net? Log it on paper, then use Backfill Net once you're back online to transcribe the paper log. Paste rows in bulk or edit them one at a time — entries are flagged as backfilled and recorded in the audit log.
- Closed a net and later realized something's missing or wrong? Open the net from Net History and click Amend, or use the same button on the closed net's page. Edits, removals, and added check-ins update statistics and the Op Roster automatically — the net stays closed. Use sparingly.
- Looking for a specific net in Net History? Use the one-click filter chips across the top — Last 90 days (default), Last 30 days, My nets, Open only, Backfilled, Live-logged, or All time. The Refine popover gives precise control over date range, status, type, and an N/C call-sign filter that matches either Primary or Backup. Your selection persists per device.
- Have a one-week event to share? Add it as an announcement and set an Auto-remove after date — it'll disappear from the home screen on its own when the date passes.
- The Statistics page defaults to the current year. A complete snapshot of the prior year is archived automatically every January 1.
- Net Manager: designate up to 2 Co-Managers from the Net Controllers page so the club isn't dependent on a single person. Co-Managers can do everything you can — manage the roster, grant editor privileges, edit the preamble and announcements — except initiate a direct role transfer. If you ever become unreachable, the two Co-Managers can together perform an emergency transfer to keep the net running.
- Need to review privileged changes? Open the Audit Log from the Admin group in the sidebar (or via the shortcut card on the Settings page). Use the Categories and Actors chip rows to narrow down — e.g. "everything by VE3XYZ" or "all preamble edits this week" — and click the When/Actor column headers to sort.
- Editors: in the Announcements editor, set a Remind me to update date on recurring items (like the monthly meeting) — once the date passes, an amber Needs update badge appears and the Manager Inbox surfaces an Update Reminder row that links straight to the editor. Auto-recycles each time you save a new reminder date.
- On a phone or tablet? Phone mode auto-turns on under 640px and tablet mode on tablet-sized viewports. Both can be forced on/off from Settings → Display. See the Phone & Tablet Mode Guide for what changes (bottom tab bar, drawer sidebar, streamlined Active Net runner, full-bleed chat, stacked-card tables).
- Running a net from a phone? Plug in or charge to 100% before 19:30, lock the screen orientation to portrait, and turn on Do Not Disturb. The PhoneNetRunner shows one task at a time and the bottom tab bar keeps Active Net one tap away.
- Net Manager / Co-Manager / Editor? The administrative cards (Net Manager Email, Add Operator, Operator Roster) live inside the collapsible Administrators section on the Settings page — opens by default for you, collapsed and locked for everyone else.
